Where is Kirkjufell?

Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped peak found on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, only a short distance away from the town of Grundarfjörður. It is often called ‘the most photographed mountain in Iceland’ due to its dramatic formation and perfect coastal location.

What makes Kirkjufell Iceland special?

The magnificent mountain of Kirkjufell Iceland, and its waterfalls Kirkjufellsfoss, are the icon of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. There is something special about the shape, location and colors of the Kirkjufell Mountain. Below is my guide to help you plan your visit with map, tips and photos.

Is Kirkjufell a dangerous mountain?

Sadly, there have been three fatal accidents on the mountain in recent years. Kirkjufell is very close to Grundarfjörður, a small town on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which is just over two hours drive from Iceland's capital city, Reykjavík. From Grundarfjörður, one travels a few minutes west down Route Snaefellsnesvegur 54 to the base of Kirkjufell.

Can you rent a car to visit Kirkjufell?

Visit Kirkjufell on a tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The landmark is incorporated into many self-drive packages, such as this 10-Day Summer Trip, and vacation packages, such as this 6-Day Winter Tour. Those who rent a car can seek it out while exploring the west.
